The first step in the DOT return-to-duty process is your formal request to engage me as your Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). This step initiates the process and establishes a professional-client relationship in accordance with DOT regulations.
During this stage, we will discuss the overall structure of the SAP return-to-duty process, which consists of six regulated steps. I will explain my role as defined by 49 CFR Part 40, answer any questions you may have, and outline what you can expect from the evaluation, recommendation, and follow-up process.
This step also includes the submission of payment for SAP services. Payment confirms your commitment to the process and secures your initial evaluation appointment.
Completing this step formally establishes our professional relationship and prepares you for Step 2.
